Two people were injured in an accident involving a pickup truck and a Union Pacific train at about 7:40 am Thursday morning north of Parsons. The Highway Patrol reports that the occupants of the pickup, 27 year old Adam Charles Westhoff of Parsons and 22 year old Billy Ray Brown of St. Paul, were taken to Freeman Health Center in Joplin. The engineer and conductor of the train were uninjured. (8/4)
A trial date has been set for one of the three defendants accused in last year’s murder of Iola resident Shawn Cook. The Iola Register reports that the jury trial for Joshua Knapp will begin on November 13th and is expected to last as long as five days. Knapp has pleaded not guilty to the crime. (8/4)
Because of the chance of rain on Saturday, the start time of the Allen County Fair Mud Run at Wide Open Speed Park has been changed. The time of the run has been moved up to 2pm with the gates now opening at 10am. Admission is still ten dollars or two event tickets for adults, six dollars or one ticket for children six to twelve, with kids under five free. (8/4)
