The Kansas Highway Patrol is seeking assistance from the public to help identify and locate a vehicle that left the scene of a fatal crash early Friday morning. The crash on US-400 Highway near Severy in Greenwood County killed 45 year old Mark Makovec of Chanute. If you have information, please forward it to the Kansas Highway Patrol Troop H at 431-2100. An Elsmore woman died in a car-train accident just after 1p.m. Saturday. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a vehicle driven by 62 year old Melodee K. McEndree was eastbound on Idaho Road three miles north of Elsmore. Her vehicle was struck by a southbound train. McEndree was pronounced dead at the scene. The train engineer and conductor were not injured. (9/5)
This year’s school bus races sponsored by the Chanute Masonic Lodge drew more than 4,000 spectators over the Labor Day weekend. The Chanute Tribune reports that the races paid out about $10,450 in prize money. The defending Southeast High School Lancers from Cherokee County again took the most prize money, with a total of $2,400 in winnings. (9/5)
No injuries were reported after a pilot made an emergency landing near Burlington Saturday. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a pilot was en route to Coffey County Airport just before 11 a.m. Saturday his engine malfunctioned. The pilot, 26 year-old Andrew Reimer of Ashland made an emergency landing and landed the plane safely. (9/5)
