A juvenile suspect is in custody after Humboldt High School was evacuated yesterday upon the discovery of a suspicious device. USD 258 Superintendent Kay Lewis told KOAM TV that just after 10:30 am a middle school teacher took the device to the high school principal who then called police. Police Chief Brian Dillow says the device was an explosive device but the type is unknown at this time. The Kansas Highway Patrol Bomb Squad was called and is investigating the device. Lewis noted that Humboldt’s emergency plan went well.
When construction begins on US 169 this spring, the old highway will become the unofficial detour. Because of an expected increase in traffic on Old 169, traffic counters will be installed soon. The Iola Register reports that establishing an increase in traffic is important to help county officials make a case for state assistance with repairs that may be necessary. Two bridges north of Humboldt will be inspected as well.
