At this week’s meeting, a group of disgruntled citizens petitioned Allen County commissioners to do something about the traffic problems on old 169 between Iola and Humboldt. The Iola Register reports that In response, Commissioners said they would lower the speed limit on the old highway to 45 mph. Citizens told the commissioners about hazards they had witnessed. A KDOT engineer said that they have additional signage in the works to hopefully direct more heavy trucks and other vehicles to the official detour.
In other business, Commissioners also agreed to match donations up to $10,000 for the creation of a memorial garden on the courthouse lawn. The garden is designed to honor veterans and will be situated in the area behind the veterans wall on the south side of the square. Organizers will seek volunteers to help with construction of the garden.
