As usual you can celebrate Independence Day tomorrow with the Iola Elks as they hold their annual Ed Hendrix Fishing Derby and Fireworks Display. Gates open to the public at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Elks Lake. Registration for a fishing derby for kids up to age 16 begins at 8 a.m. and the derby takes place between 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Bait will be provided and participants receive a free T-shirt while supplies last, an entry prize and lunch. Other events will occur in the afternoon. There will be music from 6:30 p.m. to dusk, and the big fireworks display begins at approximately 9:30 p.m..
A local printer will be closing soon. The Iola office of Ravin Printing will close its doors as of July 13th. The announcement was made yesterday in an email from former owners Steve and Gail Norman who operated the business for many years as Norman Printing before they sold. Ravin will still maintain their office in Chanute.
