Moon’s Hometown Market in Humboldt will be around a while longer thanks to Monarch Cement Company. The Iola Register reports that Monarch will be purchasing the building and Moon’s will be leasing the space back to operate the grocery store. Owner Michael Moon said that the move will free up much-needed capital to keep the grocery store afloat. Moon said the transaction was a big step for the store, but would not guarantee long-term success. The grocer has faced an increase in competition over the last several years. Moon’s will also be seeking financing from other sources.

Good news for stray pets in Chanute. The Castaways Animal Shelter is close to being in the sustainable phase. According to The Chanure Tribune, major construction on the facility should wrap up at the end of January. Organizers will then set policies and procedures, and create an organization that will be sustainable, which may take one to two years.

It’s a new year but it’s the same old scam. The Garnett Area Chamber of Commerce has alerted us that they have received calls from several businesses stating that KCP&L has called them and informed them that their service is going to be disconnected. The Chamber says that the calls appears to be targeting just businesses in Garnett at this time, not residential. If you do get one of the calls, remember that it is a scam. If you’re unsure, just call the utility yourself.
